Roblox DataStore Debugging Guide
DataStore bugs can make a good Roblox game feel broken fast. The right fix is a save system that is predictable, validated and tested under failure conditions.
Use stable keys and safe defaults
- Build keys from the user ID, not the display name.
- Validate loaded data before applying it to leaderstats or upgrades.
- Use default data when nothing exists, and never assume every field is present.
Save without spamming
- Autosave at a sensible interval and avoid saving every tiny click.
- Use protected calls and retry logic for temporary failures.
- Save when the player leaves and during shutdown, while still handling failed saves clearly.
Test in real conditions
- Test with API services enabled, multiple joins and a clean new account.
- Try corrupt or missing data shapes in Studio to make sure validation works.
- Check that purchases, upgrades and rewards update server-owned state before saving.
