How to Plan a Project With AI: A Practical Guide
A useful AI project plan starts with a real goal and clear constraints, not a long list of features.
Define the outcome
Write down who the project helps, what success looks like, the deadline and any budget or technical constraints. Ask AI to turn that into a measurable definition of done, then check it yourself.
Keep the first version small
List must-have and nice-to-have requirements separately. Ask for a minimum viable scope that solves one important problem. Reject suggestions that add complexity without a clear benefit.
Build milestones with acceptance tests
Give each milestone a deliverable, owner, dependency and test. 'Improve mobile navigation' is vague; 'sidebar opens and closes on a phone and works with keyboard controls' can be verified.
Review assumptions and risks
Ask AI to identify missing information, security concerns, accessibility gaps and external dependencies. Verify financial, legal and technical claims with current authoritative documentation.
Ship, measure and improve
Test changes before production. Record the observed result and compare it with your definition of done. Start the next AI session with that evidence so the plan stays grounded.
